The winter is officially here, and your car is feeling the burden, especially if you live in the Northeast. Prevent future issues by making and sticking with these quick, easy resolutions. Like anything, preserving the value of your car is all about routine, care, and establishing good habits.
Service: Check belts, hoses, lights, and even your battery before or at the start of the winter season. Doing this now will prevent the surprise of having something malfunction when you least expect it – on your way to work, to pick up the kids, or even while driving.
Wipers: Make sure those wipers from 2021 are not cracked or worn. Low visibility is a major cause of all accidents. Be prepared for ice, snow, fog, and rainy conditions. Expecting snow or cold temps? Lift your wipers off the windshield to prevent freezing.
Tires: Winter tires are always best practice, but if you’re not someone to make the swap, please check your treads and tire pressure. For every 10-degree drop, your tires may drop 1-2 PSI, leaving you and your car susceptible to a variety of accidents.
Liquids: Extreme cold causes liquids to become thick and work less efficiently. Stay on top of oil changes as a way of preserving the long-term value of your car.
Safety: If we’ve learned anything from recent news across the country and unexpected weather conditions, having an emergency roadside kit can be invaluable. This kit should include a scraper, flashlight, small shovel, extra windshield wiper fluid, blanket, and even a water and a snack.
Gas: It’s always best practice to keep that gas tank full, however in the event you are stuck on the road unexpectedly in cold temperatures, this becomes even more important for both heat and safety.
Battery: Cold temps can decrease your battery’s voltage. Make sure you’re starting with a strong battery at the start of the season.
Pump the Breaks: Yes, literally, and metaphorically. Brake pads should be replaced every 10,000 to 20,000 miles and rotors every 50,000 to 70,000 miles.
